Probe into fatal fire at St. Mary's home

By Mike McPhate

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the death of a man found in a burning shed at a St. Mary's County home.

The fire broke out around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the two-story shed behind a home on Morris Drive in Lexington Park.

Firefighters found a man on the second floor of the shed and removed him from the structure.

The fire marshal's office says man is believed to be 43-year-old Charles Christopher Luffey, the son of the owners of the home who sometimes stayed on the second floor loft area of the shed.

The Office of the State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to confirm the victim's identity and cause of death. The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation.

Officials say no working smoke alarms were located during the initial investigation.
