Md. updates same-sex benefit policy
Maryland has updated its benefits policy for state employees to include same-sex spouses who possess a valid marriage certificate from another state.
The Maryland Department of Management and Budget updated the policy on Wednesday in its role as administrator of the state employee benefits program.
Same-sex spouses will now be able to enroll eligible dependents under the program.
Couples who already have a valid marriage certificate from another state may enroll to cover a spouse for a July 1 effective date. A form must be received by the Employee Benefits Division by close of business June 2.
In February, Attorney General Doug Gansler issued a legal opinion saying Maryland must recognize out-of-state gay marriages until the Legislature or courts decide otherwise.
