Settlement reached over Frederick jail suicide
Survivors of a man who hanged himself with his shoelaces in the Frederick County jail have reached a $50,000 settlement with the sheriff’s office.
The Frederick News-Post reported Tuesday that a circuit judge will be asked on Thursday to approve the proposed deal stemming from the June 10 death of 26-year-old Justin Lihvarchik of Sabillasville.
His mother sued the sheriff’s office on behalf of Lihvarchik’s son, alleging neglect by jail workers.
The jail policy is to check inmates in holding cells every 20 minutes. Lihvarchik was found dead about three hours after he was placed in a holding cell on a second-degree assault charge.
Two correctional officers were subsequently disciplined and shoelaces were banned in holding cells.
