Shooting near roller rink in Temple Hills

By Erica Johnston

Update, 8:10 p.m.:

Prince George's County police are now saying that a 15-year-old girl, not a boy, was shot and wounded Tuesday during a large fight between two groups of youths near a Temple Hills area roller skating rink, police said.

Officers responded to the 3100 block of Branch Avenue and found the victim just after 6 p.m., said Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a spokesman. Police said 30 to 40 youths were involved in the fight in the parking lot of the Skate Palace.

The girl, who was grazed in the wrist by the bullet, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.

Police took one adult male into custody at the scene and two other people were taken into custody in the District in connection with the brawl, Copeland said. It was not immediately clear what had sparked the fight.

The first thing I noticed was the largest group of transit police that I've ever seen walking out of Naylor Road Station toward Branch Avenue and then down Branch Avenue...then I saw all of the kids staring them down and then quickly walking away from them. It looked more like 70-80 kids. Under the train overpass/Branch Ave underpass, there were three other kids, two girls and a boy with a belt or bike lock in his hand ready to swing. I continued the block up to the District and down Southern Ave toward Marlboro Pike and saw four transit police vehicles speed by me heading toward Naylor Road. I had no clue there were shots fired nor that the incident had occurred up the hill at the roller rink. I didn't see any Prince Georges County police on the scene.

It doesn't take much motivation for some to resort to violence. A look or a petty slight is all that's needed to escalate to deadly violence. What a vicious and violent culture.

We never hear what actually happened, but young adults attending a skating rink, should not have to worry about getting shot, our children appear to like this drama, I was at the rink, and someone fired off, this is joke to them, very sad, that they can't understand, that guns kill, disputes like this only end up with someone dead, and locked up, and it's young black people, parents talk to your young adults, uncles, aunts, god parents, friends, and grandparents we all need to do the same, they need help now, tomorrow is too late, text them e-mail them, show up at their school, but this is critical, just glad no one was killed, but someone is still going to jail, unacceptable behavior.

A 15-year-old at a roller rink on a school night?

She should have been at home or at the library doing homework.

No wonder our public schools are failing so abysmally.

PG County is going to the dogs! Some of these kids are so ruthless b/c their parents are not parenting. Drinking and smoking with your children is unacceptable. Set good examples and prayerfully they will follow. If your kids are hanging with unruly youngsters get them away from them. Stop blaming the police, teachers and hold these children accountable for their actions!

I just have to ask this question: Who brings a gun to a rollerskating rink?
Just not 2 things I'd put together...rollerskating and shooting.

It's too late people. Too late to help these young idiots. One poster wrote that our kids seem to enjoy this kind of drama. You are absolutely right, therefore nothing we do will help them. They are so accustomed to violence and bloodshed that they probably anticipated someone being killed, either from being "stomped out" as they call it, shot or just beaten to death. That's the culture they live in, grew up in, and one that society had a part in creating for them.

These kids go into a frenzy at the mear thought of violence. It's easy for them to stand around and watch a man be murdered and maybe joke about it later.

We're all gonna pay later for allowing our kids to grow up in a culture filled with sex, violence, and a focus on material wealth.

These mob incidents involving black youth have been going on for decades. The only reason that you are hearing about them so much now is because of the Internet.

It was across the street from Naylor Road Metro Station. There is also a church in the same mall in addition to the roller rink, so you could say it was outside a church. It was a LARGE group of youth. I'm thinking it was a church group.
