Silver Spring man hit by car dies

By Associated Press

Montgomery County Police say an 85-year-old man has died after he was hit by a car at an intersection in the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring.

Mohammad Fartash of Silver Spring was crossing Bel Pre Road at Connecticut Avenue on Sunday morning when he was hit. Police say 52-year-old Vincent Dixon of Silver Spring had stopped for a red light and when the light changed he turned and hit Fartash, who was in the crosswalk.

Dixon was not injured and remained on the scene. Fartash was taken to Suburban Hospital for treatment and died Sunday evening.

The investigation is continuing.

Pedestrians in the crosswalk have the right of way. Unless something really strange was going on, it sounds like the driver was at fault. Aspen Hill is Aspen Hell for pedestrians. MoCo needs to make its big, ugly streets safer for pedestrians.

Pedestrian in crosswalk, sounds like driver was not paying attention to what was going on, saw the light change and pulled out. You have to look for pedestrians in crosswalks. Yes, there are peds who will just step into the crosswalk as a car is pulling into it and there is no time for a driver to stop, but this driver was at a light. There is no excuse for this kind of accident.

"Aspen Hill is Aspen Hell for pedestrians."--catbird500

You should truncate that after the 5th word. And I kind of like Aspen Hell. I particularly like the weird & ornery Aspen Hillbillies up there.

"Christ, look in every direction before you move!!"--jckdoors

Amen. Nothing's sacred, nobody's safe.

A corollary: Assume that everybody else is even stupider than you are.

I'll be shocked if this doofus driver Dixon is actually charged.
