Naval Academy midshipmen hospitalized

By Washington Post editors

A hot day has taken a toll on about 50 U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen during the Color Parade that is held each year during graduation week.

Judy Campbell, a Naval Academy spokeswoman, says 10 people were taken to area hospitals on Thursday as a precaution, including four civilians.

Campbell says some midshipmen passed out during the parade, while some took a knee due to the hot and humid weather. Midshipmen march in full dress during the parade.

The Color Parade is the oldest special parade at the U.S. Naval Academy, a tradition that began in 1871.

Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to address the academy's commissioning ceremony on Friday in Annapolis.

My goodness. Isn't it time for the Commandant to ban the Color Parade? It's clearly more dangerous than the Herndon Climb... Anyway, hope the midshipman recovers quickly and fully.

Speaking of Service Academy guest speakers, can you believe that Joe "5 Deferment" Biden has the nerve to be the graduation speaker at a Service Academy again this year! Last year it was the Air Force Academy and this year on 25 May it’s the Naval Academy. There is something incongruous about allowing a “draft dodger” to lecture future Military Officers at their commissioning as if he were a “role model” to be emulated. Of course, Joe did demonstrated his Military Expertise by the way he skillfully avoided any brush with armed conflict during his youth when he successfully dodged the draft and Vietnam (he and Dick Cheney did everything short of maiming themselves which neither had the guts to do – I guess it’s a prerequisite for the VP job). By comparison, Biden makes "W" look like a war hero! (For the record, Bush flying antique Air National Guard Convair F-102s was probably in more danger than I was during an extended CIB-earning tour in Vietnam!)

That said, I will listen to his speech with anticipation as I am confident he will commit some “world-class” gaffs to provide comic relief. Joe "5-deferment" is the reason every American should pray every evening for Obama's good health! He will go down in history as the dumbest and most inept vice president of all times; by contrast he makes Palin look smart and Dan Quayle absolutely brilliant.
