Navy SEAL from Va. dies in Afghanistan
A highly decorated Navy SEAL based in Virginia Beach has died in combat in Afghanistan.
The Navy said Chief Special Warfare Operator Collin Trent Thomas was fatally shot Wednesday while deployed with a SEAL team based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek. The incident happened in eastern Afghanistan, but the Navy gave no other details about the circumstances of his death.
The Navy said 33-year-old Thomas had been awarded a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and several personal, unit and campaign decorations. Thomas, a Kentucky native, had been involved in numerous combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq since February 2000.
