Police: Md. man tried to set wife on fire

By Washington Post Editors

A Queen Anne's County man is facing attempted murder charges after police say he pumped gasoline into the passenger compartment of a car while his estranged wife was inside, then set it on fire.

The woman told police that she was in the driver's seat at a Stevensville gas station on Friday night when her estranged husband, Pernell Clanton Jr. of Grasonville, began pumping gas through an open window. Maryland State Police say Clanton ignited the gas, but his wife escaped just as it exploded.

A nearby motorist hit the emergency cutoff switch to turn off the pumps. Both Pernell Clanton and his wife, Yolanda, were hospitalized with injuries from the fire. A warrant was issued charging Pernell Clanton with attempted murder, assault, malicious burning, arson and other offenses.

What did she do to provoke such violent act. Also, perhaps she should not have been with her ESTRANGED HUSBAND!

Excuse me - no one does anything to deserve this kind of brutality.

Women don't deserve any violence upon them least of all from their husbands (estranged, ex or otherwise).

Check yourself.

A warning! go nowhere with your estranged husband especially if there is a history of abuse physical or otherwise too many times women have been assaulted, kidnapped, even murdered at the hands of their estranged husband's this women was very lucky they should lock him up and throw away the key.

She probably wouldn't listen. Hey, these broads drive a hard bargain, the hubbies can't cope, they go berserk. Whaddya gonna do, the guy took a crack at peace and quiet and freedom from nagging. Lots of women slice off appendages and shotgun their husbands and that's ok with women in general, how is this any different? I think broads are all angry and nagging and they don't like it that some men answer back in kind.

We all want to ignite the flames of passion sometimes but this is getting a little carried away.

What is wrong with you people? What kind of a person would make a joke of this?

What's wrong with WHAT people, Karen? As if you didn't celebrate the Bobbit case? The ENTIRE women's movement came out in support of Lorena Bobbit. Another woman shotgunned her minister husband in bed in the middle of the night in Texas because she had too many children. The ENTIRE women's movement came out in her support. Susan Smith drove her 3 children into a lake in the Carolinas and the ENTIRE women's movement came out to protest her sentence for murder. In June, 2001 Andrea Yates drowned her five children in the bathtub. The ENTIRE women's movement came out in her support. Women attempt the murder of their husbands, commit murder on their husbands and murder their children by the thousands every year and in every case, the ENTIRE women's movement gathers to support them outside of courthouses and rallies in celebration of what these women have done. As if the murder of children by their mothers is just more late-term abortion.

So don't pull this nonsensical, weird amazement that people are irreverent about this. Women pull these stunts all the time, but it happens so much, the press doesn't bother reporting it anymore. Mustn't be insensitive to the right of women to murder their husbands and children if they have PMS. It's only because it happens so rarely that we heard of this guy trying to kill his wife. So stop with the piety. Women are far more evil in this regard than men. AND, they get away with it.

The article did not say that they were traveling together. Perhaps he saw her or followed her to the station and saw a chance to attack.

I don't care if the ENTIRE women's movement comes out in favor of public castrations, stuff like this is evil.

The guy should serve some heavy time.

I don't think "JamesChristian" gets a lot of women, much less sex.

I feel you James Christian. Women are more evil, but that man should have shown some restraint.
