By Washington Post editors

Maryland State Police helicopters and officers and detectives from Montgomery County are searching an area in near Oakland Terrace Elementary School in Kensington for a burglary suspect who eluded police after a car chase overnight, county police said. Officers have been stationed at the school, which is not on lockdown, as a precaution.

The suspect is one of two adult men discovered inside at about 3:30 a.m. inside the Sheppard Pratt Frost School in the 4900 block of Aspen Hill Road after a security alarm triggered. One suspect was caught at the scene but the second ran from police and then fled in a vehicle, striking an officer who rolled from the hood of the car and prompting officers to shoot at the vehicle, a police spokesman said.

The officer hit was not seriously injured, the spokesman said. The suspect bailed out of the vehicle shortly at about 4:15 a.m. in a wooded area near Beechbank Road in Silver Spring, police said.
