Squirrels found hanging outside Md. dorm

By Washington Post editors

Officials at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, say they believe two squirrels found hanging outside a men's dormitory at the historically black university were a college prank and not a racial threat.

The squirrels were found Monday, prompting concerns from some students that the squirrels might be an act of racism. However, UMES spokesman Gaines Hawkins called the matter a "stupid college prank," noting the squirrels were found hanging by string, not a noose, and said university administrators do not believe it was racially motivated.

Very sad! In fact, I ahd just spoke to one of them - Jasper. He seemed to be happy and was planning on renting a tree down near Myrtle Beach for the summer. You just don't know anymore. These are difficult times for us all. Many of us with not enough money for retirement; others, not enough acorns for the winter.

what else would you hang squirrels with other than string?

So, like, is anyone looking at this from the angle of killing the squirrels? This is a case of cruelty to animals, which is against the law. Just sayin' . . ..

I always staple the dead squirrels to trees to ensure my intentions are not misinterpreted. I have indeed been concerned about the string/noose connection, and nails may upset some Christians.

@Bitter_Bill,
The autopsy is still pending, but the FBI do not believe hanging was the cause of death. DHS has not ruled out terrorism.

Torture and abuse of animals is the first presenting sign of many a serial killer. Just throwin' it out there . . .

RIP to my cousins.

Maybe they committed suicide because of bad grades. Or autoerotic asphixiation -- that goes on a lot at colleges I hear.

To those who think that this is funny: grow up! Morons!

A waste of perfectly good squirrel meat!

And to those who take this incident too seriously (as if there were not more important issues of the day), get a life.

I certainly don't like to read about someone gaining amusement from hurting innocent animals, but there is a certain humor to it that is sort of dark, so chill, folks. We're not condoning murdering small woodland creatures for sport...

A waste of good string.

So because this moron couldn't tie a noose loop, this isn't considered a 'hate crime'?

Oookay...

I hope they're at least trying to figure out who did this. If they can find the person, then they can know for sure whether race was a factor, or if the responsible party was just being an idiot. AND they can draw up charges against the person for animal cruelty, which this most certainly qualifies for, unless they found the squirrels dead before stringing them up.

Where is the FBI when you need them to review its ever present surveillance video to ID the culprits.
