Sylvie Cachay's boyfriend held without bail

By Associated Press

An Oscar-winning songwriter's son is being held without bail after being accused of choking his swimsuit designer girlfriend at a swanky New York City hotel.

Twenty-four-year-old Nicholas Brooks was charged Saturday with attempted murder and strangulation in the investigation surrounding Sylvie Cachay's death.

Attorney Jeffrey Hoffman has said Brooks is not guilty. Hoffman says Cachay was “absolutely fine” when last seen by his client.

Brooks is the son of Joseph Brooks, who won an Academy Award for best original song for the 1977 ballad “You Light Up My Life.” His 33-year-old girlfriend was discovered dead in a tub at the Soho House hotel early Thursday. An autopsy found signs of choking.

Writing "You Light Up My Life" is a crime in itself. No wonder his son is messed up like his father.
