Man sentenced for drugs in juice boxes
A Rhode Island man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison after he attempted to smuggle $500,000 worth of heroin in juice boxes through Dulles International Airport.
Twenty-three-year-old Emmanuel Rios was also sentenced to four years of supervised probation Friday by U.S. District Judge James C. Cacheris.
Rios pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute heroin in February.
Court documents say Rios was traveling on a U.S. passport when he flew from Guatemala to Dulles on Dec. 13 and was selected for a routine border patrol inspection.
An officer found 24 juice boxes inside his luggage, but discovered the juice boxes contained 41 pellets of a powdery substance wrapped in a condom. Rios said the powder turned into juice, but tests showed it was heroin.
