'Slug' drivers get ticketed on 14th

By Washington Post editors

Slug drivers say police have been enforcing the District's no-stopping zone law and ticketing them for picking up carpoolers. Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier says police haven't changed what they normally do, WTOP reports.

"There's been no change in what the normal enforcement has been," Lanier told WTOP.

The chief plans to check the ticket statistics to see whether there has been an increase in ticketing.

Drivers say they received $100 tickets along 14th Street in the afternoon.

While it is illegal to stop, informal carpooling or slug lines have been in use in the region for decades. Picking up slugs lets a driver use the High Occupancy Toll lanes on the region's interstates.

Unless DC wants to clog streets with more traffic they should create off street pick up zones for slugs and slug drivers. It's not really rocket science....

Nobody has ever claimed that cops weren't idiots.

I've never met a cop who has graduated from college.

dc government... what a bunch of morons, yet again.

dc should be ENCOURAGING carpools to alleviate traffic congestion, not penalizing those who do create informal carpools. they should set aside slug lanes just as they have allocated lanes for taxicab stands all over this city.

the police allow taxicabs to stop and sometimes block TWO lanes of traffic when they pull over on short notice. do taxicab drivers get fined for that? of course not!

for that matter, cab drivers weave all over the traffic lanes downtown in search of fares. how does that not constitute reckless driving?

this isn't about traffic flow, it's about making a quick $100. let's not pretend DC cares about traffic congestion. or safety, for that matter.

You are forgetting it's the DC government, logic and reasoning are not their forte.

I guess you've never been outside of DC then, kenk3, since many area departments require officers to have college degrees.

ticketing these drivers just creates more obstructions on the road.

If you ticket these drivers, then please ticket taxis for creeping along at 0-5 mph looking for fares. If someone wants a ride, they will flag you down.

Targeting and Ticketing drivers from outside DC is a major source of revenue (and a quasi commuter tax) for the District of Columbia. My only question is when will our congressional representatives step up and stop representing DC to us and start looking out for the constituents whom they arbitrarily target for revenue?

It seems like the only efficient departments in DC are the ones who ticket people. I swear, if the rest of the DC government was efficient as their parking enforcement, the city would be a much better place to live.

DC police assume ticketing alters our driving behavior. Maybe if my metro ride gets any faster or comfortable, I will never drive again and don't make DC police rich.

While I don't agree with ticketing the slug pick ups, I think some of you who claim the cops don't know what they are doing obviously have never been down 14th street during rush hour. Those of you saying DC should be promoting car pooling are probably the same ones complaining about traffic back ups-- probably due to someone stopped in the curb lane during rush hour. You can't have your cake and eat it too. What they should do, is make the slug lines at the city center parking area-- where the BoltBus picks up. This way, slugs get their ride, drivers don't get a ticket, and the rush hour lanes stay open and unblocked.

PracticalIndependent-- How about getting your representatives to give us in DC representation? If you don't like getting a ticket in DC, ride the Metro (and keep in mind, METRO is separate from the DC Government) And it is even-steven-- anyone with an out of state tag is just as likely to get a ticket in DC as any other state. I can't tell you how many cars with Virginia tags I see getting pulled over in Charles and St. Mary's county when I go down there-- Are you going to ask your representatives to step up and stop Maryland from targeting out of state drivers?

Seems the cops' time (and ours as well) would be FAR better spent ticketing the Loudon and PW County commuter buses that routinely block the intersections by pulling into the box as the light is turning yellow. But nah, let's not actually solve any real problems. Let's worry about revenue instead.

Slugs are a creation of surburban drivers and not the responsibility of the District. 14th street is a busy street especially during rush hour. To keep traffic flowing cops try to prevent stopping on the street. This is no different that what is enforced in other parts of the city. Maybe the slug drivers can find another pickup area off of 14th street.

Hey this is great. The Va. drivers create a mess commuting into DC, and then create another on the way out with this slug business (hmmm...thats funny, thats exactly what they are) slowing down everyone else with their numerous accidents and horrible driving habits. It's about time they found out they can't have everything their way. Excellent job Chief Lanier!!!!

kenk3
you are a moron
in most jurisdictions you have to have a degree to be a police officer

Posted by: pjclarkfour | June 17, 2010 10:54 PM | Report abuse

ticket them. they need to get out the way. if they want to use hov lanes, then they should plan a car pool in advance.

Posted by: mamaspearl | June 18, 2010 6:04 AM | Report abuse

Please continue to ticket them and please increase enforcement. There is a reason you aren't supposed to just stop on that street during rush hour -- it f's up traffic for everyone else so that a few inconsiderate drivers can use the hov lanes when they cross into virginia. Carpoolers don't have to do pickups on 14th street during rush hour and can find another spot or just plan in advance.

Kenk3,
You must feel good about yourself because you have a degree, but you probably couldn't handle being a police officer. Some of the stupidest people with absolutely zero common sense that I've encountered have had degrees. Just because you went to college doesn't make you smart. And by the way, cops go to an academy before they are sworn in as law enforcement officers.
