Va. man dies cutting tree in yard

By Washington Post Editors

A Virginia man has died after being injured cutting a tree in his yard.

Officials say 44-year-old David Miller was cutting the top off a tree at his Fredericksburg home when he was pinned between the section he'd cut and the trunk. He was pronounced dead Saturday at Mary Washington Hospital.

Fredericksburg Fire Department spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe says Miller was about 30 feet up the tree and wearing a safety harness when the accident occurred. He was conscious and able to communicate with firefighters, but slipped into unconsciousness.

It's kind of like serving as one's own defense attorney -- a non-professional tree-climber has a fool for a topper.

This person lived down the street from me and I knew him personally. He was not an amateur or some naive Harry-Homeowner. He was an accomplished handyman and Do-It-Yourselfer, and had experience trimming trees while an employee of VDOT. He had all the proper safety equipment and had two assistants on the ground helping him.

It was just a freak accident that could have happened to anyone; experienced or not.
