Va.: Marine dies in accidental shooting
A 20-year-old Marine was killed early Sunday in what authorities said was an accidental shooting at Marine Corps Quantico Base, Maria Glod reports on The Post's Crime Scene blog .
Lance Cpl. Kevin P. Grant, of Harvey, Ill., was pronounced dead at Mary Washington Hospital, officials said.
Officials released few details about the shooting, saying the investigation is underway.
Chuck Jenks, deputy director for public affairs at the base, said Grant was with friends in base housing early Sunday morning when he was killed. He would not say whether the shot was fired by someone else, or was self-inflicted. Jenks said no charges have been filed.
"Circumstances indicate it appears to have been an accidential discharge of a firearm," Jenks said. He would not elaborate.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is handling the case.
