Explosives testing at Quantico this week

By Washington Post editors

Fairfax County police say explosives training at the Quantico Marine base is causing the shaking and booming some residents are feeling and hearing.

WTOP reports that nearby neighbors have become used to the sounds and tremors. But this time, the noise is being heard and felt as far away as Fairfax Station. Apparently the cloudy and cold weather allows the sound to bounce off clouds and travel farther.

The training is scheduled to take place every day this week through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
