Tiger dies at the Virginia Zoo
Officials at the Virginia Zoo are mourning the loss of their second Siberan tiger, the (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reports.
Shaka Khan died of bone cancer on Friday, and the zoo announced the death Monday. Her sister, Shere Khan, died in May, also of cancer. They lived 18 years and became popular attractions after gas station owners and school groups raised money for a tiger exhibit.
"They were really loved by the community," said curator Louise Hill. "We'll miss them. I don't know if people understand how attached keepers get to the animals and how hard it is on staff. It's more than a job."
