Parking limits may delay Pentagon move
The House Armed Services Committee wants to limit parking at a new Defense Department site in Northern Virginia, a move that could delay indefinitely the transfer of 6,400 Pentagon employees.
The measure, included in the defense spending bill likely to come to a House vote by Thursday, was sponsored by U.S. Rep. James Moran (D-Va.). Moran has criticized the proposed move as a failure of Pentagon planning, saying it could cause region-wide gridlock on roads and highways.
Many of the employees are slated to move from Crystal City and other areas with easy access to public transit. The transfer to the car-dependent site near Seminary Road, off of I-395 in Alexandria is scheduled to occur by Sept. 2011.
