Ruling: Love killed by head trauma
University of Virginia women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love was killed by blunt force injury to the head, the state medical examiner’s office confirmed Thursday. The office also officially ruled the death of Love, a 22-year-old Cockeysville, Md. native, a homicide.
George Huguely V, a 22-year-old Chevy Chase native and former Virginia men’s lacrosse player, continues to be held without bond in an Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail cell on a first-degree murder charge related to Love’s May 3 death.
Huguely kicked in the door of Love’s off-campus apartment, shook her and repeatedly slammed her head against a wall, he told police upon his arrest shortly after Love was murdered.
Huguely and Love had dated on and off in recent years, and his attorney, Francis McQ. Lawrence, has called the incident “an accident with a tragic outcome.”
A hearing for Huguely, who withdrew from the university, is set for Oct. 7.
