Shenandoah celebrates 75th anniversary

By The Associated Press

Shenandoah National Park is kicking off a yearlong celebration for its 75th anniversary.

Officials launched the campaign on Friday at a ceremony at McCormick Gap Overlook in Afton.

The Daily Progress reports that the park turns 75 next year. Shenandoah National Park follows the Blue Ridge from Front Royal to Rockfish Gap.

The park was once private property, and many property owners opposed the idea of their homes being seized to make a national park. Officials say the land had been heavily marked by man before it was seized to create the park and over time nature has healed it.

Friday's ceremony was the first of several that will be held over the next several months.
