Va. records show dip in gun permits

By Mike McPhate

State police records show fewer Virginians are seeking concealed handgun permits this year than in 2009.

The records show a nearly 40 percent drop through the first half of 2010. The state issued 26,317 permits from January through June, down from 43,273 during the same period a year earlier.

Handgun permit applications spiked 21 percent from 2008 to 2009.

Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave says fears that President Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress would tighten gun laws have eased and many people who wanted permits now have them.

"State police records show fewer Virginians are seeking concealed handgun permits this year than in 2009."

Simple answer for this: Those who want them already have them.

Not only that, more folks open carry than concealed carry these days. That doesn't require a permit.

Hey, if the anti-gun left wants to count this as a win for their side, fine by me.

Now go away and leave us alone.

As we see in the prior post, gun control proponents almost unfailingly have an unhealthy fixation on gun owners' sexuality. That is why the adults get to set public policy.

Of course, when you are dealing with the Freelance Star, it's always best to double check the facts. They aren't exactly known as the worlds most accurate reporting body, or most widely known. Given their anti-firearm position, one would be better checking with the Virginia State Police. This is the same paper that published the entire concealed carry permit list for the state, endangering countless lives by doing so.

I believe this shows it's a vocal minority creating all the hue and cry. Most people have more important things to worry about in their lives.

Might be nice to report how long a Va. concealed carry permit lasts, once issued.
