Movies, grocery stores, pharmacies: What's open?

Updated, 11:55 a.m. Sunday

If you're bored, hungry, in need of toilet paper, want to see a movie or just need a place that still has heat and electricity -- and if you can walk or otherwise travel without endangering yourself and others -- here's a sampling of places that are open in the region.

Please note that closings and openings may change quickly, depending on weather conditions. Call before putting on all the snow gear and heading out.

Many urban restaurants and bars are open. Call before you go.

But hey, fellow area residens and D.C. in particular, isn't it wonderful news to hear that President Obama in the spirit of aid to Haiti today is recognizing the dire straits of the area population and has announced that he is earmarking another $10 billion in aid of local taxpayers and municipal authorities who are faced with extraordinary expenses stemming from Snowmageddon!

Thank you Mr. President and all your White House staff, espeially Rahm Emanuel, for your compasion and understanding and prompt action in our time of urgent need. You give us hope again.

Well, yes, maybe it was all just a dream but who knows these days the local needs are at least the equal of many others at home and abroad and they are getting handsome sums of taxpayers' dollars, why not the Metropolitan area?

Why not indeed!

Arlington's Westover Market is open, and the outdoor Beer Garden is too (fire pits make it bearable). I know I'm going tonight after a long day of shoveling.
