Butts of Contempt

By Marisa Katz

By Karen Kirschenbauer
South Riding, Va.

At least twice a week I see people toss cigarettes out of their cars, presumably for the rest of us to clean up.

I find this behavior to be ignorant and unacceptable. People need to know that a cigarette butt is considered litter.

When I reported one incident to the Loudoun County police department, I was told that there was nothing they could do unless an officer witnessed it.

I would urge all smokers to go ahead and smoke, but please stop littering. We have enough to clean up.
