My Endorsement: McDonnell Has My Vote

By editors

The Post is asking readers to make the case for their favored candidate in the Virginia governor’s race in 200 words or less.

By Robert Miller

Supports: Robert F. McDonnell
Party Identification: None
2005 Vote: Jerry W. Kilgore

The country and the commonwealth face unprecedented challenges, from unemployment and underemployment to stagnant incomes and highway gridlock. Some of the worst traffic in the United States forces many Virginians to spend hours stuck in their cars instead of with their families. Yet some still choose to focus on a 20-year-old academic exercise that has absolutely no relevance to this race.

Name one state that has elected a pro-life governor (and there have been many) who has then gone on to outlaw abortion? There aren’t any, because of something called Roe v. Wade. What’s more, even if Robert F. McDonnell wanted to try to restrict contraception for married adults, which he has clearly stated he does not, he would run into the same issue — Supreme Court precedent (Griswold v. Connecticut).

So rather than focusing on some ridiculous, manufactured issue, let’s talk about real issues that have a real impact on Virginians. I, for one, am taxed enough, and I believe the last thing we need is bigger government in the commonwealth. McDonnell has my vote.

To submit your own endorsement, write to with “My Endorsement” in the subject line. Include your party identification, if any, as well as how you voted in Virginia’s last governor’s race. Finally, please include a day and evening phone number (not for publication) and a note disclosing any connection you have to Sen. R. Creigh Deeds or Robert F. McDonnell, their campaigns or the Democratic or Republican parties.

As an Asian woman who once worked in the civil service and now working part time because of this economy, I feel a lot of pressure in the past few weeks from the endless and now annoying Deeds attacks interrupting my radio my tv that just has to stop!!! Initially the thesis surprised me, but after a closer look, Mcdonnell seems like a normal family loving guy. It's not like his 3 daughters are all nonworking moms and his sons are all church ministers. Bob is a handsome looking normal guy ok! He and his wife did something right for raising 5 kids who all work and they kept their marriage together. How many women wouldn't want that? Maybe not 5 kids but that is when I realized Deeds is NOT good and his poopy mouth that doesn't know when to stop lost my support.

Being an independent and former government worker, I have tried to keep an open mind because I have seen politicians come and go. I also know how inefficient government can be from the inside out ok. Mcdonnell just seems to have stronger leadership skills and his policy proposals shows an even handed approach. We need to protect those state government jobs and manage the budget at the same time. I can't believe with all the dollars we paid in taxes this state has a billion dollar deficit! Being a former government worker I have some ideas.

Another problem with Deeds, who says he is for virginia but how much time has he spent in the northern 2/3 of the state?

every time a deeds tv ad comes on, I feel embarrassed for deeds...
is this all he has...
are there not any plans or agenda he should be letting us know...
is he like obama hiding what he will do as govenor...
vote mcdonnell and get rid of the doubt...

What tools, He's good looking so vote for him ? His daughters work outside the home and that makes him progressive despite his earlier negative thesis and his bills in the legislature ? If you read comments for most if not all McDonnel supporters they complain the most about high taxes. Virginia has lower taxes than most states and has not raise the tax on gasoline in Eons. The nitwit Repubs in the House claimed they had solved the Transportation funding problem. Now we find they are unable to even fund basic maintenance for fear of losing Fed funding on large projects. McDonnel claims he can solve all our problems without raising taxes and cutting the size of VDOT. He is the Bernie Madoff of VA politicians. If you review his record he is just another VA repub politician. Running on cutting taxes and slashing programs. I hope Virginians have learned their lesson. It is the Repubs unwillingness to fund Transportation which has turned our transportation system into almost the worst in the country. I-95 is a disgrace. His solution, turn everything into a toll road and sell the ABC stores. LOL...
