Wednesday night hoops roundup

Wednesday featured a full night of action around the county as seven teams continued non-district play. Both Briar Woods teams notched big wins, Heritage swept Dominion and the Potomac Falls boys rolled to a victory. Check out the details from each of those contests.

Boys
Briar Woods 77, Kettle Run 54
Sophomore Myles Tate might just be the key to Briar Woods rising from pretender to contender in the Dulles District this season. The 5-4 point guard poured in 20 points, adding 12 assists and 5 boards as the Falcons improved to 2-0 for the first time ever with a second half blowout at Kettle Run.

Curtis Calder and Matt Roush each finished with 13 points and Yves Kuame and Mark Nervegna added 10 points apiece for Briar Woods, which outscored its hosts 42-29 after the break. The Falcons open their Dulles District schedule at Loudoun County on Friday.

Heritage 76, Dominion 66
Eric Dentler scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Pride to a 10-point victory over the defending Dulles District champs in Leesburg. Ross Alcorn (18 points) and Dentler each connected on three three-pointers on the night and Heritage raced to a 24-7 first quarter lead. Elijah Calhoun added 16 points for the Pride (2-1) who eclipsed the .500 mark for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

Kevin Conboy tallied 16 points and Deandre Reaves added 15 for the Titans (0-4) who continue to struggle following the mass exodus of last year's senior class. Dominion will look to get in the win column in Friday's Dulles District opener at home against Freedom.

Oakton 67, Freeom 53
Despite the best efforts of senior forward Vernon Miles, the Eagles could not hold down their home court for their first win of the season against the visiting Cougars. Miles scored 27 points to lead all scorers, but Freedom fell to 0-4.

Potomac Falls 76, Fauquier 43
Junior guard Lukas Mihailovich and junior forward Brandon Chesson both tallied 20 points to lead the Panthers to a rout of the Falcons. Potomac Falls travels to Stone Bridge for a non-district contest Saturday.

Girls
Briar Woods 62, Kettle Run 18
Behind 18 points from senior center Kim Bell, the Falcons crushed visiting Kettle Run to improve to 3-0 on the season. Junior guard Brittany Gilbert added 12 points for Briar Woods, which saw all 12 players on its roster score in the contest. The Falcons face a stiff early season test when they host the defending AA Division 4 state champion Loudoun County Lady Raiders on Friday in the Dulles District opener for both teams.

Heritage 45, Dominion 29
Erika Grabbi (14) and Ceara Scott (11) both cracked double-figures as Heritage rolled past the Titans on Wednesday night. The Pride (1-3) outscored their hosts 24-5 in the decisive second quarter to notch their first win of the season. Imani Smith led the Titans (0-3) with 11 points.
