Let the second season begin

Following Saturday's action from stragglers around the area, the regular season came to a close, meaning we can now gear up for the good stuff - the playoffs.

Loudoun will be represented by four teams, with two in AA Region II Division 4, and all four will enjoy home field advantage through at least the first weekend. Here's a look at the regional match ups.

AAA Division 5 Northern Region
No. 8 South Lakes at No. 1 Stone Bridge
No. 7 McLean at No. 2 Lee
No. 6 Yorktown at No. 3 Hayfield
No. 5 Edison at No. 4 Madison
Analysis: The Bulldogs and Seahawks go back to the future in a first round matchup at the scene of their regular season finale, which Stone Bridge won 45-22. Looking ahead in the playoffs is generally frowned upon, but how great would a semifinal matchup between Stone Bridge and Madison be, should the Warhawks get past Edison? You have to think the Bulldogs would come out with as much fire and emotion as they have in them with a chance to get revenge against the lone Liberty team to beat them. If the Bulldogs see Edison in the second round, there's plenty of history there as the two teams have met in each of the last three region finals....Elsewhere in the region, National District newcomers Hayfield host a familiar foe in Yorktown, a team they beat 27-19 in Week 5....After a 5-0 start to the season, the Lee Lancers dropped three in a row before finishing their schedule with back-to-back wins to clinch the second seed.

Virginia AA Region II Division 4
Byes: No. 1 Broad Run, No. 2 Sherando
No. 6 James Wood at No. 3 Loudoun County
No. 5 Liberty at No. 4 Louisa County
Analysis: As we've known for weeks, the Spartans will enjoy a first round bye and home field advantage throughout the regional playoffs. Meanwhile Loudoun County - which finished the season with two blowout wins after a loss to Broad Run - hosts James Wood in Leesburg, looking to advance to a semifinal game against Sherando. Back in Week 4, Calle Brown's 47-yard field goal in the waning seconds propelled the Raiders to a 13-10 victory in Stephens City.

Virginia AA Division 3 Region II
Byes: No. 1 Handley, No. 2 Park View
No. 6 Skyline at No. 3 Western Albemarle
No. 5 Millbrook at No. 4 Goochland
Analysis: The Patriots crept their way into a first-round bye with five wins in their final six games of the regular season....The Handley Judges reached the 2008 region final but lost to Monticello at the Handley Bowl. In their first season with a renovated field, they'll be looking to write some new history with a run to the state playoffs.
