Raiders Finish Sixth at AA State Tournament

For the second consecutive day, Loudoun County shot a 311 at the AA Virginia state golf tournament at Williamsburg National Golf Club, landing the Raiders in sixth place, 37 shots behind state champions Jamestown.

In their second straight trip to the state finals, the Raiders improved on their seventh place finish in 2008 behind solid performances from junior Brantley Kushner (74) and Michael Linville (77). Juniors Kevin Cook (78) and Andrew Brenneman (82) rounded out the second day scoring for Loudoun County. Kushner’s two-day total of 151 led the team.

“We were pleased to get there again this year,” Loudoun County Coach John Laycock said. “I don’t know if moving up one spot is progress or not, but it’s tough at the state level. There were a lot of great players down here and it’s fun for our guys to be able to compete with them.”

Jamestown – which benefited from the tournament being played on its home course – took home the title with a 585, edging Blacksburg by three strokes to claim its first state crown since 1999. Clay O'Connor of Lord Botetourt won the individual championship with a 67 Tuesday and two-day total of 138. The Raiders, who won the Dulles District regular season and tournament and finished second at the Region II tournament, will return all but one player from this year’s team.

“You can’t get ahead of yourself,” Laycock said. “You can’t plan to make the state tournament every year because it’s awfully hard to get here. We just have to prepare and take it as it comes, and hopefully we’ll get another shot at it.”
