Welcome to Mids Insider
Welcome to Mids Insider, the Post's new blog about Navy football. My name is Camille Powell; I'm the beat writer, and will be the main person posting on this blog, though college sports editor Matt Bonesteel will assist from time to time.
This is the third year that I've covered the Midshipmen — I also wrote about the team in 2003 and 2008 — and I'm hoping to use this space to tell some of the stories and pass along some of the notes that I can't get into the print edition of the paper. I'll be figuring out this thing as we go along, and I'm open to suggestions: please post them in the comments section below, or feel free to e-mail me at powellc[at]washpost.com.
Let's start off with some links, as we count down the days to Navy's season opener on Saturday at No. 6 Ohio State. (Hat tip to Scott Strasemeier, Navy's indefatigable sports information director.)
Two Columbus Dispatch writers offer up a podcast previewing the game, calling Navy "a great opener" for Ohio State. (Fast forward to the final quarter to hear what they have to say about Navy.) Navy is no Youngstown State (Ohio State's opening opponent in 2008), says the Associated Press.
Junior nose guard Chase Burge is one of five Ohio natives who are looking forward to playing at the Horseshoe; senior slotback Bobby Doyle, sophomore center Brady DeMell, sophomore center Mike McCarthy and sophomore wide receiver Doug Furman are the others.
The Columbus Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer take a look at what makes playing a sport at the Naval Academy different. Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor respects Navy, according to this video from the Columbus Dispatch.
The Plain Dealer asks whether Navy's triple option could help "other needy college teams," and has a video of several Midshipmen explaining the offense. In his Ohio State blog, Plain Dealer beat writer Doug Lesmerises says that he expects Ohio State to lead by no more than 10 points at halftime, because of the challenge of defending the triple option.
And in case you missed it, here's a story about Ohio State's "Take the Field Tribute" for Navy, and some of the Midshipmen's reaction to it.

I have absolutely no doubt in Navy's ability to win games. I have been a Navy Football fan since 1970. I think Ohio State had better be very careful, because Navy's Triple option is one that is hard for opposing teams to prepare for, and is a very dangerous type of offense which can break off big chunks of yards. I have heard talk that Navy poses a real threat to Ohio State, if you remember when Paul Johnson was here and in a game against the MAC in 2007 when he ran a 26 play drive that took up nearly 14 minutes of one quarter, this is what this team can do.
I think Navy edges out Ohio State, the 21 1/2 points Navy is an underdog means nothing. I think Navy keeps this game very close to the vest and controls the Ohio State offense, by limiting there time on the field by running very long offensive sets, and when Ohio State does get on offense, the few times they do, Navy's defense which returns 8 starters will snuff out Ohio State's offense and controls Pryor, by assigning a fast linebacker on him. Navy wins this game.
Final Score Navy 33 Ohio State 30
Go Navy Beat Ohio State !!!!
