More notes from Navy-Notre Dame

Some more notes from Navy's 23-21 victory over then-No. 21 Notre Dame on Saturday:

--Coach Ken Niumatalolo became the first coach to lead an unranked Navy team over a ranked Notre Dame team since 1936 (the first year of the poll), when Tom Hamilton directed the Midshipmen to a 3-0 win over the 13th-ranked Fighting Irish. Ranked Notre Dame teams had beaten unranked Navy teams 41 straight times.

--This is just the second time in series history that Navy has beaten Notre Dame in back-to-back games in South Bend. The Midshipmen won 13-10 in 1961 and 35-14 in 1963.

--This is the second year in a row that Navy has beaten a ranked team; last year, the Midshipmen topped No. 16 Wake Forest, 24-17. The last time that Navy beat ranked teams in back-to-back seasons came in 1984 (over No. 2 South Carolina) and 1985 (No. 20 Virginia).

--Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis is now 3-2 against Navy and 5-3 against service academies. Joe Kuharich (1959-62) was the last Notre Dame coach to lose two games to Navy.
