Navy still down several starters

The Midshipmen again will be without a handful of starters for Saturday's homecoming game against Duke at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Missing from the lineup are safety Emmett Merchant, nose guard Shane Bothel, place kicker Joe Buckley, right tackle Matt Molloy and wide receiver Mike Schupp. Coach Ken Niumatalolo earlier this week appeared optimistic over Merchant's progress, but approaching Saturday, the senior was not recovered enough from a concussion. Merchant has not played since a 14-6 loss to Air Force on Oct. 2

Bothel remains out because of turf toe in his right foot and has not played since the Air Force game. Buckley, meantime, will miss his second straight game after being tackled following his final extra point during a 28-21 victory over visiting Southern Methodist on Oct. 16.

Molloy is out for the rest of the season because of multiple concussions. Molloy, a senior, had started two of the first four games this season after becoming the starter halfway through his sophomore season. Schupp tore the ACL in his right knee during a 17-14 season-opening loss to Maryland at M&T Bank Stadium, but the senior is working to make it back for Navy's game against Army on Dec. 11 at Lincoln Financial Field.

There was a bit of positive news on the injury front for the Midshipmen. Senior fullback Vince Murray, who hurt his knee during a 28-27 victory over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., is scheduled to be in uniform but is unlikely to play. Junior Alexander Teich has started in his place over the last two games. In last Saturday's 35-17 win against Notre Dame at New Meadowlands Stadium, Teich ran for 210 yards, becoming the first fullback in school history to amass 200 yards rushing in a game.
