Navy short-handed again without Joe Buckley
Place kicker Joe Buckley became the latest in a long line of Navy starters to miss a game when he sat out this afternoon against Notre Dame at New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Buckley got tackled late after making the final extra point in last Saturday's 28-21 victory over visiting Southern Methodist, drawing a flag for roughing the kicker, and was unable to practice this week.
"It's very unfortunate that it happened, that he got hurt that way," Coach Ken Niumatalolo said.
Buckley, a senior, is Navy's all-time leader in extra-point percentage, having made 59 of 60 (.983) and this season has made 5 of 8 field goals. Junior Jon Teague, who normally handles kickoffs, replaced Buckley against the Fighting Irish.
Buckley has plenty of company on Navy's injured list. Also unavailable were right tackle Matt Molloy (concussion), safety Emmett Merchant (concussion), fullback Vince Murray (knee), wide receiver Mike Schupp (torn ACL) and nose guard Shane Bothel (turf toe). All are seniors.
Quarterback Ricky Dobbs also was slowed earlier this season with a sore ankle incurred in a 17-14 season-opening loss to Maryland at M&T Bank Stadium.
