April Food Mag Roundup; Introducing Eco-Bites

This month's batch o' food glossies has been selected because they make me happy and satisfied, like a good meal. Rather than complain about the mags that failed to feed, I simply omitted them from the list.

Cooking Light
Despite all of the private lessons over the years, I remain a pasta dingbat. I haven't given up all hope, particularly now that I've read through Lidia Bastianich's extensive how-to feature on making the dough by hand (as in no pasta machine whatsoever, even a hand-cranked version). One day this spring, I'll follow Signora Lidia's steps and see if I can finally change my pasta fate.

Jewish cooking authority Joan Nathan has penned a terrific recipe feature on making Seder a multi-cultural affair that draws on recipes from several countries. In the back of the book, there's a helpful companion piece on Kosher wine picks for Passover.

I'm also intrigued by the Indian vegetarian recipe feature by chef and cookbook author Suvir Saran, who offers a fresh take on classic meatless dishes.

Nancy Harmon Jenkins's extensive report on Bologna is a keeper; she leads one of the most thorough discussions of the region's quintessential dish, ragu alla Bolognese. This is hard core Italo-phile reading - and will keep you entertained for weeks. A food geek award winner.

A big high-five for the roundup double hitter: 1.) cookbook shops around the country here's mine from last year's blog space) and 2.) the latest batch of meatless cookbooks. Tasty tidbits.

There's more of Italy to go 'round, and Gourmet goes there with gusto. If you're planning a trip within the next year, I'd hold onto this issue, which includes a host of regionally-focused pieces that beat out any of the bigger travel guides, including the coastline of Puglia (can't wait to make that octopus salad), the pasta of Ferrara, the fish of the central Lakes, and the dining scene of Venice.

Eating Well
It's the green issue -- and a job well done. Check out the report on the state of farmed salmon, the pros and cons of grass-fed beef, the profile of organic rice producer Lundberg Family Farms and a look at the line of biodynamic wines at Benziger Family Winery in Sonoma.

I'm grateful (and think many consumers will be, too) for the "green choices" shopping guides for meat and poultry, seafood and produce. Each guide includes contextual background for each category, plus the latest on labeling (i.e. grass-fed versus natural beef, certified organic versus certified humane chicken), which can be confusing, at best. I'm tearing all three out of the magazine to hang on the fridge.

And speaking of the environment ... April is Earth Month here at A Mighty Appetite, and every day this month I'll offer an "eco-bite," a little morsel of environmental food news for viewing, chewing or continued exploring.

Hi Kim!

Thank you for the Eco-Bite of today: the NRDC page is really great and another tool to help me buy local/in-season.

That being said, I've been hanging with my farmer-friend who does her own CSA. It has been exciting to see what is already in the cold-frames, the seedlings under the lights, and to see her breeding turkeys strutting around the farm. I can't wait until summer.

Looks like that eat local tool doesn't have data for all the states yet. It tells me there's no local produce available in Louisiana right now. They only have food available here June through December, yet my (local-producers only) farmers' market runs year round. This looks like a good resource. I hope they can add the rest of the states.
