Angela Taylor Is New Mystics GM (Update)

From Kathy Orton:
The Washington Mystics hired Angela Taylor as their vice president and general manager, the team announced on a conference call with reporters today. Taylor spent that past two years with the Minnesota Lynx as the vice president of business development.

Taylor has been with the WNBA since its inception, working in the league office for nine years. Before joining the Lynx, she was the senior director of player personnel, responsible for college and international player evaluation.

"Angela brings a wealth of basketball and business experience to the Washington Mystics," Mystics chief operating officer Greg Bibb said. "We are very fortunate to have someone with over 15 years experience in the WNBA joining our ranks. Angela has been involved with the league since its inception. She has experienced success at all levels of the game, as a player, as a coach, as a basketball administrator and as a business leader. We are excited to welcome her to the Mystics family and I'm eager to begin working with her to create a winning basketball team."

Taylor, who grew up in Mountain Home, Idaho, graduated from Stanford University in 1993 with a degree in economics and was a member of the Cardinal's 1990 and 1992 national championship teams. She earned her MBA at New York University.

Taylor replaces Linda Hargrove who was fired on Sept. 22 after four years as general manager. Under Hargrove's leadership, the Mystics went 60-78 and 0-2 in the playoffs.

Washington ended its most recent season on a nine-game losing streak, finishing 10-24. The team has yet to name a head coach. After Tree Rollins was fired on July 19, assistant coach Jessie Kenlaw was elevated to interim head coach. Detroit Shock assistants Rick Mahorn and Cheryl Reeve have interviewed for the position. Bibb said the team hopes to have a head coach in place by mid-November.

Didn't know the Mystics interviewed Rick Mahorn. He might make a good coach for the team. I like the idea. Bring some toughness to and team that needs it.

Kathy, this is pretty much a regurgitation of the Mystics' press release and previously published info. On the conference call, were you given the opportunty to ask questions? If so, can you tell us what Ms. Taylor said? E.g., what are her most immediate priorities (besides hiring a coach)?

15 years experience in a 12-year-old league? Hmm, seems the Mystics need a copy editor.

The choice looks encouraging.

Was Anne Donovan considered?
