Shock Assistants Interview with Mystics
Both Detroit assistant coaches Rick Mahorn and Cheryl Reeve interviewed for the Mystics open head coaching position, according to the Detroit News.
So far there hasn't been much word out of Verizon as to when the Mystics will name a new general manager and a permanent head coach. Although the news that Mahorn interviewed doesn't seem like much of a surprise. He was one of the initial names that league sources offered as a prime candidate to take one of the Mystics' open positions, partially because of his history in Washington. Mahorn spent five seasons with the Bullets from 1980-81 through 1984-85.

I watched Mahorn play during his "Beef Brothers" days with the Bullets and, while I think he'll make a good head coach someday, Reeve's experience makes her the more qualified of the two, I think. I'd still like to see Pokey Chatman given a looksie, though. OF, like you, I also heard that time period for an announcement of some sort. Stay tuned.

No way....Rick Mahorne all the way...He has experience winning as a player(who will undoubtedly infuse his players with that same nastiness), a asst. coach who trained and learned under bill (who made ridiculous trade after another to bring in and develop talent) and he can offer insight to the post and help develop Lang and whoever else is left this year...He has a calmer side then Lambier but I like his fire! I dont know much about Reeves but I would split their duties one a GM one a head Coach and break up this Detriot Dynasty!

Thanks Katie. As you say, hardly a surprise here. The Mystics wouldn't be doing due diligence if they hadn't interviewed Mahorn and Reeve.
As for when there will be an announcement, Greg Bibb's blog post last Thursday on the team's web site says that they have identified a candidate who fits all of Bibb's seven listed criteria and that fans "should keep your eyes and ears open for some news within the next 10 days."
The Detroit News article linked in Katie's post, dated Oct. 20, quotes Mahorn as saying that he interviewed two days after the Shock won the title (two weeks ago) and is still "waiting to hear back." Unless we are all being spun or Bibb has yet to inform the seemingly ideal candidate he mentioned in his blog post that the candidate is "the one," that would seem to eliminate Mahorn.
However, we do live in Spin City . . .
