Gameday: Fever at Mystics
From hard-working intern Bill Oram:
Minutes away from tip-off at Verizon Center where the Mystics host the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Fever ...
*The Fever at 11-3 are led by forward Tamika Catchings, who is coming off of a unusually quiet night Sunday in Indiana's loss to Connecticut. Forward Monique Currie draws the assignment of guarding the explosive Catchings to start the game for the 7-6 Mystics, but said it's going to take a team effort to contain the All Star.
"We just want to disrupt her as much as we can, try to slow her down, keep the ball out of her hands," said Currie, who was a teammate of Catchings' in Poland in the offseason.
*While the undisputed star of the team, Catchings isn't Indiana's leading scorer. That distinction belongs to fellow All Star Katie Douglas, who averages 16.6 points per game and has scored in double digits in 14 straight games.
*In the Fever's loss to Connecticut, Catchings scored just 5 points in a game that snapped an 11-game winning streak. To hand them their second consecutive loss, Mystics guard Alana Beard said, Washington will have to contain Catchings, but also do something else.
"For us, we have to take something away from them," she said. "We have to make them do things they don't want to do."
*The Mystics have had four of their last six games decided by two or fewer points, winning two of those.
*Point guard Lindsey Harding, who was not named to the All-Star team as a reserve, has been key in recent games, leading the team in scoring in a loss to San Antonio, with 18 points, and Saturday against New York, when she scored 22 points in the win.
Harding told the Post's Katie Carrera Monday that while it would have been an honor to earn an All-Star nod, she wasn't overly concerned about not making the squad. Beard however, was more than willing to state her disappointment in Harding's absence from the team.
"She's an all star in my mind and she's an all star in a lot of people minds," Beard said. "It's very disappointing she didn't get voted in because in my opinion she's the best point guard in this league right now. And I'll willing to put my paycheck on that."

I'm surprised that in your WashPost article reporting the Mystics/Fever game, there was no mention of the officiating, which was the worst I have seen in all my years as a STH. I wish you had noted (1) the number of controversal fouls called, (2) the crowd reaction, which was the loudest and most sustained booing I have ever heard in a Mystics game, and (3) the disparity in fouls called against Catchings (14 free throws) vs. Beard (1 free throw). Perhaps, the Mystics would have lost anyway, but we'll never know, will we?
