Humphrey released, Mosby re-signed (Update)

The Mystics have released seldom-used center Tasha Humphrey and re-signed forward Bernice Mosby. The 6-foot-3 Humphrey saw action in all nine of the Mystics games this season, but only averaged 7.4 minutes and 2.2 points per game, raising some questions as to whether she had fully recovered from a knee sprain that sidelined her throughout training camp.

Humphrey was acquired late in the 2008 season in a trade with the Detroit Shock that sent Taj McWilliams-Franklin to the eventual WNBA champions. Coach Julie Plank would not specifically say if the reason for Humphrey's limited playing time was lingering effects from her injury.

"She did the best that she could," Plank said about Humphrey. "But we needed somebody who could play more minutes....I don't know how much of it was her injury but we are trying to go in a different direction with a different style."

In her third professional season, Mosby returns to the roster of the team that drafted her in the first-round (6th overall) in 2007. She saw limited action during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, averaging 10 and 7.4 minutes per game, respectively, and never seemed to gain the confidence of any of the many coaching staffs that have rotated through Washington. After failing to make the team out of training camp this season, Mosby may not have many more chances to prove she has developed into a responsible WNBA player.

"We just felt like the team needed a change," Plank said. "There are things that Mosby does defensively that I feel can help our team and that brings a different dimension than what we have now with her rebounding presence."

I think we're seeing just how very hard it is in one season to make over a team that was as bad as the Mystics were last year (and for most of their history). Angela and Julie just don't have that much to work with.

I sure hope Marissa is ready to play again soon!

The Mystics low post duo of Melvin and Sanford has to be the worst in the WNBA but the team signs a tweener instead of a post player

I realize Humphrey is likely injured, but I hope releasing her doesn't come back to haunt the Mystics. Is Mosby really the best player they could find? There must be somebody out there with some experience who could fill the Mystics' needs better than Mosby.
