Mystics re-sign Blue

The Mystics announced Monday that they re-signed point guard Nikki Blue. Washington's back-up behind Lindsey Harding in 2009, Blue, who will be entering her fifth season in the WNBA, appeared in just 16 games last season and played more than 10 minutes on only three occasions.

Blue will be one of many guards vying for a spot on the Mystics' final 11-player roster, a competition that has been sparked by the news that Alana Beard will miss the 2010 season after undergoing ankle surgery, leaving an unexpected spot up for grabs.

Guards listed on Washington's roster currently include Lindsey Harding, Katie Smith, Matee Ajavon, Marissa Coleman, Kristin Haynie, Nikki Blue, La'Tangela Atkinson and Alexis Gray-Lawson. If you were building this year's roster who would you include?

I'm honestly stunned that they re-signed Blue, given Katie Smith's signing and Kristin Haynie's acquisition. But, whatever brings more competition to the roster. Right now, I'd have Harding backed up by Smith at the points, and Coleman and Ajavon as the shooting guards.

I am very surprised they would resign Nikki Blue. They barely used her last year showing no confidence in her. I think Nikki looked around at other teams and found no takers so she said she will give one more shot here. Best of luck to her but I think it is a longshot of her actually making the team.

With Beard out, I think they'll have to start Katie Smith at shooting guard, with Harding starting at point. I hope Haynie makes the team as she's a pretty experienced point guard, certainly more capable than Nikki Blue, and she can spell Harding. Ajavon should get plenty of minutes off the bench at shooting guard. Coleman is listed as a guard but more often comes off the bench for Currie at small forward. There are a lot of ways to rotate these players that could be advantageous depending on match ups. It's certainly not a good situation with Beard being out but far from disastrous because of the acquisition of Smith.
