Just another Manic Monday
Man, did I hate the Bangles.
Hope everyone had a good weekend. What's the weather like up there? In the 70s all weekend here. Kinda cloudy today. Some talk about rain. Bummer.
Eventful weekend. A garter snake found its way onto one of the fields and had to be cleared by Tim Foli (former Class AAA manager, now field coordinator in the minor leagues). Wildlife here is out of control. Two years ago, I saw an armadillo right by the stadium. The number of birds nearly as tall as Jon Rauch roaming around here is stunning. I guess some of them must have bought one of those three-bedroom places on the brand-new cul de sac down the street from the ballpark.
Other news: 10-foot-tall Teddy Roosevelt showed up at yesterday's workout. To the uninitiated in Viera (and, from time to time, I kind of feel like everyone in Viera is unitiated), Teddy was a weird sight. I mean, I'm sure he could walk into the Starbucks at Third and Pennsylvania SE (the very same Starbucks shared by General Manager Jim Bowden and yours truly) and not have anyone bat an eye. I saw 10-foot-tall Abe Lincoln on the Metro one day, and no one even turned their head as he sat and read the Post (Style, not Sports. He said something about going to catch a play at Ford Theater that night).
Anyway, Teddy appeared to be getting a workout in so that he can prepare for the 40-feet-Worth-of-Presidents Races beginning April 2 at RFK Stadium. (For the uninitiated -- Hello, Viera! -- Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson race down the warning track at RFK during each game, and Teddy has never won.)
Also: Yesterday was photo/video/sound day here. The guys had to get in their real game uniforms, tape interviews with MASN, film instructional videos to be shown on the scoreboard at RFK (refuse to call it a Jumbotron, as it is actually more like a Minitron) and do all sorts of silly things. Remember those old-timey baseball cards in which the guys would stand with a bat and fake a swing? Well, they still do that stuff. Topps and Upper Deck were both here yesterday, and -- no offense to the players -- but they had to do some stuff straight out of the '50s. I expected all of Space Coast Stadium to suddenly turn black-and-white, and for the Beav to appear from the center field wall.
Today: Yet another workout. But tomorrow -- drumroll -- the spine-tingling excitement of an intrasquad game. Totally fired up for that. Check out my notebook in today's paper if you're totally into who will pitch Tuesday and Wednesday. Shawn Hill draws the assignment in the Grapefruit League opener on Friday in Vero Beach against the Dodgers. And the evalutation begins.
I'll be back later. But just a heads-up: If any of you haven't been watching these videos produced by post.com's Jonathan Forsythe, you're missing out. The one where Manny Acta is miked up for his first workout is fascinating. He'll have a couple more appearing on the site today, and then throughout the week (though he has since flown home, but because his Terrapins beat the Heels last night, he may have been able to do so without an airplane).
Talk to you around lunch time.
