Tim Redding

He started the game for the Nationals. This is/was a big outing for him, his first actual start against another major league team. He pitched out of the bullpen earlier in the week against Atlanta, coming in when the bases were juiced and allowing three runs. Not an ideal situation to judge him.

Well, here's the early returns from today:

2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

He might take the mound for the third, but I'm not sure. He gave up back-to-back homers to Ben Johnson and David Newhan to start the second and had problems finding the strike zone. He reached three-ball counts on five of the 13 guys he's faced so far. I have him for 49 pitches through two innings, with 28 strikes.

Nats go six up, six down through two, and the Mets lead 4-0. Winston Abreu now on in relief of Redding.

all along i've hoped the pitching would sort itself out, despite the media (except you) beating us to death with the "who are these guys" routine. we know who these guys are, they are failed prospects from other organizations brought in here to see if something sticks to the wall. however, as bad as last year's starters were, and they were all below replacement value (read Baseball Prospectus), i figured and i think Bowden firgured) it couldn't be worse. we may both be incorrect.

if Shawn Hill can stay healthy he may be worth looking at. but Redding obviously isn't grasping his 2nd (or 3rd of 4th) chance, Williams just looks lost, and Simontacchi is what he is. Chico isn't quite ready, and O'Connor, while being a nice guy and local kid, can't break glass from 60 feet.

i hope the specter of a 110 loss season doesn't ruin the "Grand Opening" next year.

I'm beginning to think I cursed some pitchers with my picks in Guess the Rotation. Sigh.
