McGeary deal done!
It's inside 15 minutes of the deadline, but a source close to the negotiations between the Nationals and left-handed pitcher Jack McGeary, who they selected in the sixth round of the June draft, said that a deal is done. McGeary is prepared to forego his scholarship to Stanford -- which seemed like a commitment he would honor on the day of the draft -- and sign a professional contract with the Nationals.
I do not yet have terms, and they may be difficult to get tonight. I do not expect an announcement tonight. Neither Stan Kasten nor Jim Bowden have commented on the deal.
This is, however, a huge coup for the Nationals. Let me get some stuff done for the paper and then fire up another entry. Think of it this way: Three left-handed pitchers, three first-round talents (in Washington's eyes), and all three deals done (Detwiler, Smoker, McGeary).

This goes out to all of you who thought the Plan might be a joke. This is putting your money where your Kasten is.

And a bit of a coup as well for a certain thorough, careful reporter (you spell it just like you say it!) and a bit of egg on the face for a certain house organist.

To review, the Lerners have, to date:
- hired a crack team of scouts
- cut dead-weight has-beens from payroll
- found some surprises
- drafted top talent
- signed some core vets for the bench/clubhouse
- fired Aramark for next year
- signed all the top draft picks
What's left on our wish list for the Plan at the beginning of the year? Big name free agent? Anything else?
I think these owners are turning out to be pretty good.

This is great news. I did not expect the NATS to sign him. Kudos to all above who could stay up so late.
