Shawn Hill's return delayed

So after going over reports of Shawn Hill's five-inning, one-run start for Class AAA Columbus last night, Nationals GM Jim Bowden decided it would be better if Hill have one more start in the minors.

"We need him to command his secondary stuff a little better," Bowden said. Hill needed only 54 pitches to get through those five innings, so he threw 20 more pitches in the bullpen. "But I told him I want those 20 extra pitches to come in the game," Bowden said.

Bowden spoke to Hill by phone this morning and presented him with the new plan. Hill was supposed to start next Tuesday against Philadelphia, but now the tentative plan has changed to Tuesday in Richmond for Columbus, then a week from Sunday at RFK against the Mets.

Also: Dmitri Young not in the lineup tonight because of the hamstring. "It's improved," he said, "but it's not to the point where I can go out there and not risk anything." He described himself as day-to-day still, and when I asked if he might need tomorrow off, too, he said there was no way to tell. He did say he could pinch hit tonight, though.
