So yesterday Manny Acta made mention of Jack Billingham, the guy who gave up Hank Aaron's 714th home run, the one that tied Babe Ruth. Turns out that when Acta was a player in the Astros' system, Billingham was the pitching coach for Class A Kissimmee. The two got to know each other, and like 10 years later, Acta came back to be the manager of Kissimmiee, and Billingham was still the pitching coach there. Acta said the guy never wanted to coach in the big leagues.
Anyway, kids used to razz him about giving up that homer, and he'd scream back. "You know why I gave up that home run?" he'd say. "Because I was there." For a kid in Class A trying to get to the big leagues, that brought a taste of reality.
There was one kid who came up one time, his first spring training, who made up a little poem.
"Jack be nimble, Jack be quick. Jack -- Hank Aaron jumped all over your $%#@!" Billingham didn't find that too amusing.
Anyway, kinda funny how many people have little connections to this piece of history. Nationals taking BP right now. Hope y'all enjoy this one.
