Winter ball update

While I collect my thoughts for the upcoming holiday week - and do some reporting on where the Nationals stand two weeks before the winter meetings - I'll pass on this update on Nationals in winter ball. (Special thanks to Nationals sub-assistant for baseball information Mark Rogoff for this info. These are his words, not mine.)

RHP Adam Carr had no record and a 3.18 ERA in 7 games (one start)...he struck out 10 in his 11.1 innings of work, and allowed only 2 extra-base hits (both were doubles) his lone start October 20 vs. Peoria Saguaros, struck out 5 and allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings.

INF/OF Kory Casto hit .281 with 6 doubles, one homer and 9 RBI in 18 games...he went 7-for-18 (.389) with 3 doubles and 5 walks in his last 5 games...he made 9 starts at first base, 6 starts in left field and 2 in right field.

C Devin Ivany batted .233 with 3 homers and 8 RBI in 11 games...all 3 of his homers came in his first 2 games...he batted .095 (2-for-21) wit one RBI in his final 5 games after hitting .364 (8-for-22) with 7 RBI in his first 6 games.

OF Justin Maxwell batted .207 with 7 doubles, 2 homers, 15 RBI and 15 steals in 30 games...he was 15 of 16 in stolen-base attempts...he hit .313 (10-for-32) with runners in scoring position...12 of his 15 RBI came in his last 17 games.

RHP Garrett Mock went 1-2 with a 4.78 ERA in 8 games (7starts)...he was 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA (6 ER/23.1 IP) until giving up 8 runs on 10 hits in 3.0 innings in his final outing yesterday at Scottsdale.

RHP Alexis Morales posted no record and an 11.74 ERA in 7 relief appearances...he walked 14 in his 7.2 innings of work.

RHP Zechry Zinicola went 1-1 with one save and a 3.48 ERA in 10 games.

RHP Jason Bergmann is 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA in 4 starts with Licey.

Venezuelan Winter League:

RHP Jonathan Albaladejo is 2-2 with 4 saves and a 3.24 ERA in 17 games...he has 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings of work.

Also, in case you missed this, check out this nomination of Mike Bacsik for Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. It's by my buddy Lee Jenkins, who was with the New York Times when we were in San Francisco covering the Bonds chase but has since left for SI. An interesting take.

Will get you more later. I'll also be on "Washington Post Live" at 5 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet today.
