Zimmerman update: Another surgical procedure
Just finished typing this for tomorrow's $.35 edition. Figured y'all should see it here.
Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman yesterday underwent a follow-up procedure to clear up a hematoma that resulted from last week's surgery on his left wrist, the club said last night.
The surgery, performed by hand specialist Richard Barth, evacuated a small blood clot that was causing some compression within Zimmerman's carpal tunnel, Nationals officials said. The procedure isn't expected to impact Zimmerman's preparation for spring training.
Zimmerman, 23, had surgery to remove the hook of hamate bone from his left wrist on Nov. 7. Though he the injury had flared up when he swung a bat in his home town of Virginia Beach three days earlier, doctors told him it was possible he had broken the bone - which is frequently removed from the wrists of baseball players and golfers - several times in the past and it had just healed on its own.
The recovery time was expected to be four to six weeks, and the club believes that is unchanged - even with the latest complication. Zimmerman wore a splint after the surgery, even as he hosted his charity golf tournament last weekend in Virginia Beach. But when the wrist didn't feel normal, he asked the club's medical staff about it. A subsequent examination revealed the hematoma.
Zimmerman hit .266 with a team-high 24 home runs and 91 RBI in 2007, his second full season in the majors. He and the Nationals are exploring the possibility of a long-term contract this offseason.
