How about the spring schedule??????

Posted by: Nats Fan | December 18, 2007 12:05 PM | Report abuse

where are the "businessman special" games????

shucks

Posted by: Jeff Davis | December 18, 2007 12:06 PM | Report abuse

wonder how the 4:35 game will play out. that was a horrible time of day to hit at RFK, with the sun/shadows.

Posted by: 231 (other 506) | December 18, 2007 12:11 PM | Report abuse

While I'm glad the Nats will be closer to me on the 4th of July, wouldn't it make more sense to be playing baseball in the nation's capital on the nation's birthday???

Posted by: Jason | December 18, 2007 12:12 PM | Report abuse

Just noticed something else -- they swapped the two April series with the Mets, I assume because of the Pope's visit here. April 15-16 are now AT New York, while April 23-24 are in DC.

Posted by: Cosmo | December 18, 2007 12:15 PM | Report abuse

I think that 4:35 game is just a tryout, to see how the area will handle traffic a little earlier in the day. It's not clear if there will be any parking available earlier in the afternoon.

"where are the "businessman special" games????"

I agree with this comment. Nothing like taking off early from work for a ballgame. I guess they didn't want to risk having a weekday game with only 15 or 20 thousand in attendance. Wouldn't look good in the new stadium.

Posted by: NoVaSnow | December 18, 2007 12:18 PM | Report abuse

I assume they ment to say the Dodger in late August and not the Angeles.
Need more Saturday afternoon games. The Saturday game last season vs. Colorado was great. Perfect time to tailgate.

There's a nice photo of the park accompanying the ESPN article on the opener:

Anyone know when single game tickets go on sale?

Posted by: EG | December 18, 2007 12:34 PM | Report abuse

Too bad about about no "business man" specials. Those were my favorites games to attend. I believe the reason is the lack of parking and they want to make sure the cars/traffic have left the city. That's a shame.

Posted by: Loggie | December 18, 2007 12:46 PM | Report abuse

got confirmation from Stan K. that the reason no "businessman special" games is indeed because of parking. Most of the lots there already have other daytime uses. He hopes to be able to add some in '09.

New schedule -- whoop de woo. What with the steroids cloud and other events, I'm not feeling enthusiastic about baseball next year, and that saddens me.

Posted by: natsfan1a | December 18, 2007 1:06 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Jason. I say we start a campaign to have the Nats play at home every July 4th just like the Cowboys and Lions always play every Thanksgiving.

Posted by: Section 319 (late of 426) | December 18, 2007 1:10 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Jason - that'd be a great tradition to start - the Nats should always have a home game on July 4.

Posted by: boxjam | December 18, 2007 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Only one strech of interleague games, and no home one against the O's? That seems like a bad idea to me if they want to try and get some kind of local rivalry going to juice attendance numbers a bit.

On a side note, Congrats to the Nats Journal for making on the "News Columns and Blogs" section of the WP home page. We can't get this blog linked there during the majority of the baseball season, but the 2008 schedule must have been deemed newsworthy!

Posted by: Manassas, VA | December 18, 2007 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Ohh wait, n/m. There;s one little hidden set of games, and I had things revered on who was going where when. My bad.

Posted by: EricS | December 18, 2007 1:19 PM | Report abuse

The Nats played July 4 in their temporary crappy old stadium and don't get to play July 4 in their brand-spanking new one?!?

Posted by: Juan-John | December 18, 2007 1:19 PM | Report abuse

8 home games in all of July? That seems weird. And, I echo the sentiments of others who think baseball is missing a nice bet establishing Washington DC as a permanent location for a 4th of July game. I wonder if this, too, is a victim of concerns about transportation infrastructure?

Posted by: mrsandy | December 18, 2007 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Maybe there are no businessmen's (businessperson's?) specials this season because of the uncertainty of the parking situation. I doubt that the somewhat overwhelmed streets of Capitol Hill could handle an influx of thousands of baseball fans circling blocks in residential areas looking for parking spaces!

Posted by: leetee1955 | December 18, 2007 1:45 PM | Report abuse

Opening Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, all good. Agree we need the Fourth as well, though. Lots of division games in September again, which is the way it should be.

And, pulling from an earlier post, 223, I think we should refer to the Nats as the Washington Visigoths whenever the topic involves assault and battery.

Posted by: Bob L. Head | December 18, 2007 2:00 PM | Report abuse

I think it stinks that they have effectively discontinued midweek day games. Shame on them.

The spring schedule is out!

http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/spring_training/tentative.jsp?c_id=was

Posted by: Nats Fan | December 18, 2007 2:30 PM | Report abuse

I can understand the concern regarding parking in DC for weekday day games, however many of the people that attend these games either already have downtown parking or use mass transit. For those that don't they can use the parking @ RFK. I don't see a problem here. Perhaps I'm naive, but those with dedicated day parking where the team has an agreement for ST holders can park elsewhere for those few games.

Posted by: Smirkman | December 18, 2007 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Couldn't they do a Sat-Sun spring training homestand in Viera at least once??

Posted by: Juan-John | December 18, 2007 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Wake up people. The Nationals can't play at home every Opening Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. There are 29 other teams, and 28 of them also want all of those dates each year, the 29th probaby wants Opening Day, Canada Day, Victoria Day, Labour Day, and Civic Holiday/Simcoe Day. Do you really expect the Orioles to never play at home on those dates ever again?

Posted by: WMATAGMOAGH | December 18, 2007 3:28 PM | Report abuse

The Nats might be temporarily foregoing weekday afternoon games until the parking situation is completely clarified.

Anyway, good to have the schedule out. Now to play the games. (and a note to Stan Kasten: Ban "Sweet Caroline" from this ballpark FOREVER! Damn Boston song.)

Posted by: Vincent | December 18, 2007 3:29 PM | Report abuse

So what are the possibilities of scoring opening day tickets? I wonder how many will be released to the GP?

Posted by: Jamming | December 18, 2007 3:45 PM | Report abuse

if i remember correctly, the plan was for single game tix to go on sale in february, with STH getting first crack at them.

Posted by: 231 (other 506) | December 18, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Would like to have seen that Saturday game in April against the Cubs played in the afternoon -- not to mention the opener. March/April is cold for night games. Remember last April the players wearing hoods -- and the stands empty?

Posted by: Meridian | December 18, 2007 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Game times can always be changed later in the season if they want to. Once the parking is sorted out we may get a few changed back in July and August.

Posted by: EricS | December 18, 2007 4:36 PM | Report abuse

If Boston can get a Red Sox home game every year for Patriots day there's no reason the Nats can't have a home game on July 4 every year.

It just makes sense. All other holidays are negotiable...

Posted by: Gibby | December 18, 2007 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else notice that there are no weekend Phillies or Mets games...except for the Mon Sept 1 holiday game. Blows.

Thank you for the Google Calendar with all the Nats games!

Posted by: Sec 416 Nats Park | December 18, 2007 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Gibby,

Patriots Day is only observed in Massachusetts and Maine. July 4th is observed by all 50 states. A Nats home game for every July 4 will pretty much prevent the Orioles from ever having a home game on July 4 again. It isn't reasonable, and won't happen.

New Yorker here--I wish there was a weekend Mets series. I've been planning on taking a road trip down there to see the new park... it looks like I'll have to come when the Nats are playing somebody other than the Mets.

Which may be found where?

Posted by: natsfan1a | December 19, 2007 9:33 AM | Report abuse

Comparing the Nationals' and Orioles' 2008 schedules, I found 9 dates where both teams have home games (as opposed to only 1 or 2 dates in previous years). I think by now it's clear that the teams are far enough apart that overlapping home dates aren't going to impact attendance all that much. I don't see any reason why both teams can't have home dates on Opening Day or July 4 every couple of years, when they'll both get large crowds on those days anyway.

Posted by: Cosmo | December 19, 2007 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Even if TPTB have decided to schedule more Orioles and Nationals home games on the same dates, it is simply ridiculous to expect that a single team will have a home game on those dates each year. Would it be nice, yes. Is it realistic? Absolutely not.

There is a reason that Nationals fans (collectively) are earning a bad reuptation throughout baseball, some of the replies to this thread are examples of why a few people can tarnish a reputation.

Luckily, O's fans have a good jump on them in that regard (not to mention Yankees, Mets, and Phillies fans)...
