And Now, a Word From The President

Nationals President Stan Kasten rounded up the media during the workout today, which could only mean one thing: He wanted to sell some tickets. Well, perhaps that was a little too cynical of me. He did have some other things to say. And well, with you guys getting on my case about posting more frequently (and with so many ticket-related comments), this seemed like the perfect venue to pass along some of Stan's news, views and spin:

*Stan usually keeps the number of season-tickets sold -- "FSEs" or "full-season equivalents" in the industry parlance -- a tightly guarded secret until Opening Day, but he revealed it today. The number? "Right now, our FSEs are well over 17,000, and by Opening Day it will be over 18,000," Kasten said. "That's a 20 percent bump from last year, which should put us in between the top 10 and 15 and in the game. Considering where this team is in its development, that's a very strong number, I think."

*On the readiness of Nationals Park 38 days before its debut: "We're getting there. There's a lot that needs to be done and were doing it. We've had a lot of small test events there, groups of 100 here, 200 there, in different parts of the park, non-ticketed events, private functions."

*On the limit to the number of Opening Day tickets made available to partial season-ticket holders: There was "such a strong movement towards 20-game packages," he said. "We've sold well over 25,000 packages, but it equals about 18,00 FSEs. That forced us to put limits on extra tickets for Opening Day. We had to limit them because we couldn't give everyone the same number of Opening Day tickets. We don't have enough seats. The park is smaller. The large number of 20-game plan made that happen.... People are getting the packages they want. Opening Day tickets are the extras that we can make available, as available. I can understand people want more. But I'm sure we could sell out this stadium twice for Opening Day if everybody got what they want. But we only have 41,000 seats for Opening Day."

*(Here it comes...) Great seats are still available!: "With so many people taking advantage of the 20-game [packages], there are still great locations left for full seasons. It doesn't usually happen." What's available? "The only things sold out Dugout sections and all of the club level. Everything else, there is still availability."

*Parking: "We're still looking for more spaces. We still do not have daily cash lots identified. We hope to have some for Opening Day, but we don't have it yet. We will, however, be able to take care of all our season ticket holders."
