MASN, Comcast, etc.

No, no contoversy. Just a programming update.

MASN is here at Space Coast Stadium. Don't get too worked up. They're merely filming some commercials for the season. Right now, they have Ronnie Belliard out at second base. (Remember the ads last year? Things like, "Take that, Albert!" The production quality was good. The message? Not so much.)

I say this not to rip on MASN, which has partnered with the Washington Times, so you will see lots of Times beat writer Mark Zuckerman on the pregame show.

We at the Post, obviously, have a relationship with Comcast SportsNet that gets you all the scintillating hour of television that is "Washington Post Live." I bring this up only because I'll be on the show at 5:30 p.m. today live from Viera to discuss all things Nats.

Thought you'd be thrilled, as I am.

Hey MASN -- stop filming lame commercials and start showing live ST games! You have 2 channels. Couldn't you put a game on one of them?!?!?!?

Posted by: e | March 6, 2008 3:01 PM | Report abuse

Those commercials were awful

belliard at 2b? yea lets keep up those sage rosenfels at qb commercials.

they should have lastings milledge, patterson, cordero, and zimmerman dressed up in president's uniforms racing to homeplate.

even better have acta, bowden, kasten, lerner all racing to homeplate, with bowden never quite making it for a different reason every month. there's your marketing tip of the afternoon. free of charge.

Stan at the tree-planting ceremony:

"Next week we'll be installing the leaves, and then we'll be painting them pink."

He's funny. Maybe he should do the MASN commercials.

Here's my idea for a promo: Clint with a megaphone and a t-shirt launcher preparing to practice his routine in the new, empty park as night falls. Sweet Caroline playing in the background on an old record player, except instead of saying "RCA" it says "RFK." Gradually, Sweet Caroline fades and is replaced by something stronger and ominous and militaristic. Clint looks confused, then scared. Enter Wily Mo, Blastings and Dukes, emerging from the outfield darkness wearing scowls and helmets and carrying black bats, slapping them into their hands in unison. Clint runs away and the three guys proceed to smash the record player, and the record, to pieces with their bats. Finished, they stand up, turn around, and face the camera, bats on their shoulders. "Meet your new Washington Nationals," says the announcer as the stadium and scoreboard light up in a bright, explosive flash and the volume of the new theme song takes over completely.

Another one: Manny is the drill seargeant, inspecting the team before the game. The players are lined up, standing at attention, staring straight ahead. The same theme music plays. Manny walks the line, eyeing each player intently. At the end stands Screech, trying his best to look dignified (impossible), and wearing his usually filthy costume. Manny get to Screech, looks disgusted and says "Hit the showers!" Screech slinks away as Manny folds his arms and looks at the camera.

OK, I need a better slogan and an actual theme song. Thoughts?

My favorite was how MASN was still running John Patterson ads (Nick Johnson too) in August and September, still talking about '06 stats. Better watch out, David Wright! Uh, yeah....

Posted by: Coverage is lacking | March 6, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

That's great, Bob L! For Manny reviewing the troops, I'd suggest the Patton theme. :)

I know the Dukes Bandwagon is rolling now, but do we really want to be encouraging him to hit people with a bat yet? Let's just wait a little longer.

My return to DC is officially on. I've bought my plane tickets, as well as tickets to two games so far.

My first game at Nationals Park will be Wednesday, April 23rd vs. the Mets. With my dad. I consulted New York's schedule, and - if he makes every start - we should get to see Santana pitch.

I also bought a single for the April 25th game against the Cubs.

Before I buy any more tickets and incur the $4.50 processing fee for each seat, I thought I'd put my feelers out for any available seats for the following dates:

Thursday, April 24th
Sunday, April 27th
Tuesday, April 29th

Also, I'd be open to an NJ tailgate at RFK for the Sunday game. Who knows when I'll get the chance again?

Posted by: John in Mpls | March 6, 2008 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Bob L.:

I love your ideas... though... I think it may be a little too "cutting edge" for MASN...

An alternative might be... an ad contest! Let people shoot their own videos and do their own production, and submit them... the winner gets opening day 2009 tickets.

You could even do two categories... one with home video production, the second with storyboard submissions, and MASN produces the winner.

I'm a genius!

"Dear Bob L. Head your idea is dumb and we love sweet caroline"

You need a comma to separate parenthetical clauses, such as "Dear Bob L. Head."

Also, Bob, I misread earlier about Dukes and the bat. Consider my sincerest apologies.

Posted by: Matt | March 6, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Bob L.

I like it but, would prefer that Clint get pounded in some way, or perhaps bound, gagged and driven to some far away location never to be seen again.

The Clint character is a mystery to me. Is this best person the Nats can get to MC the between innings entertainment? I guy that talks way to fast and doesn't annunciate. Where did they get this guy, a Cattle auction in Omaha?

Comcast on DirecTV in NoVa is #629.

You guys might get a kick out of this. My Braves fan brother is driving up from Atlanta for the weekend and going to Opening Day with me.

He just called and said, "since I'm driving anyway, I checked to see about driving to the ballpark, but it might be too expensive."

heh, heh. I think he thought it might be a treat to drive to the park since I don't have a car.

I didn't know where to start.

As it happens, FOX 5 is giving away a Presidential Seats prize package for the opener. They've been running commercials for it for a few weeks now. You have to submit a video of yourself singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame by tomorrow (I think) and then there will be Internet voting for the winner. Watch The Simpsons and Seinfeld tonight and you'll probably see the commercial. Go for it! Could it be any worse than being in a virtual waiting room? And your chances might even be better...

All right- in the spirit of the Patterson and Nick Johnson ads on MASN last year, I propose the 2008 MASN ad for the Nationals:

"Brian Schneider- Master handler of young pitchers, and one of the best at cutting down would-be base thieves in the Nationals League"

(cut to old footage of Schneider firing a bullet to second base)

"Still got a green light, Lastings Milledge?"

"The Nats on MASN- and also the Orioles".

Posted by: Positively Half St. | March 6, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

Great idea, +.5 St. But if they won't go for that, then maybe they can at least do a positive spin.

"Jim Bowden traded a whiny platoon outfielder and a lovable, but aging catcher for a likely breakout player of the year.

"Run that team into the ground, Omar Minaya."

Hey, Barry. I clicked on your link to Wasington Post Live, and what do I see? Not only no mention of you on the list of guests today, but on the left hand side of the page (the one mentioning all the local sports teams featured on this site) -- not a mention of the Nationals! It lists, in order, the Redskins, the Wizards, the Caps, DC United, the Mystics, NCAA and (my favorite team) "Extra". That last one yields some miscellaneous news flashes about various teams, including a few days-old flashes about a few Nats' ST games. Pretty shabby.

@Nats Gal

Comcast doesn't have a Nationals link or Nationals page because Comcast doesn't carry the Nats cable broadcasts. It's like as far as Comcast is concerned, if we don't have the broadcast rights your team doesn't exist.
BTW - according to WFAN, tonight's Nats-Mets game has been rained out in FLA.
