Patterson and Pedro
(Game's at 7:05 p.m. Why am I up? I could have slept in. It's funny what happens when you get in a rhythm of getting up at 6:15-6:30 every day. Not exactly the in-season rhythm for a ball scribe.)
We have a bit of a marquee matchup at HSCS tonight -- John Patterson vs. Pedro Martinez. (Quick survey: would anyone in New York consider this marquee?) Patterson will make his second start of the spring, and it'll be worth keeping an eye on his mechanics. Does he extend fully? Does he finish his fastball? Does he just try to throw strikes, or is he laboring to finish hitters?
Old friends: I was in touch with Brian Schneider yesterday, and he's battling a hamstring injury that will prevent him from making the trip to Viera tonight. He's disappointed, and said he has been catching everyone in bullpens and wants to play in games, but the club is holding him back -- which makes sense for a catcher in spring training, I suppose. The problem: Schneider can't check in on Ryan Zimmerman, who is staying in the apartment Schneider owns in Viera. I guess Zim can just keep all those beer and soda cans all over the carpet.
Ryan Church: He suffered a concussion after this collision with another former Nat, Marlon Anderson. He has been in touch with some of his former Washington teammates and is saying he's feeling much better. Not sure whether he'll make the trip, either.
From the $.35/$.50-edition: I wrote about John Lannan and the lefty look of the Nats (and when I filed the story, I had written "Beltran" instead of "Odalis" in front of Perez, which is something I apparently am going to have to be careful of this year. Yikes. Nice catch by our dilligent copy desk. Notebook has a bit of Elijah Dukes, a bit of Bret Boone, a smidge of Ian Desmond, etc.
I'm going to work on setting up another Nationals Journal reader Q&A. Will let you know. Jonathan Forsythe will post another video feature here (hint: the one you can already get on Ray King if you click on it when reading one of the stories from the print edition) around noon or so. Other than that, it's laundry day, so you likely won't hear from me till I get to the park around 3 or 4 p.m.
Have a great day.
