Now, they'll need a comeback
Take a look at that Phillies' six-run sixth, in which 11 men came to the plate.
Hard groundball single from Utley. Hard groundball single from Howard. Single past diving Zimmerman for Burrell. Bleeder of a groundball single from Jenkins. Wild pitch on Rivera's first pitch. Single up the middle just out of the reach of Guzman for Feliz. Soft single to right from Coste. Pinch-hit single to left (opposite way) from Dobbs. Rollins hit by King pitch. Victorino single to right.
And they get out of it with quite a nice 3-2-3 double play from Boone and Flores.
That, if you're keeping track, is nine straight guys on -- eight singles and a hit batter.
Phillies lead 7-6, and they're now batting in the seventh. Stay tuned.

Man, bullpen can't get an out to save its life.

Yeah, Joel! Okay, now let's get to work, overhauled offense.

Hanrahan, showing some gumption. I like it.

Bloop single, I like it... why the heck is Mackowiak pinch hitting? He is a bum.
Posted by: Jason | April 3, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse
Uh, Lo Duca?
Posted by: natsfan1a | April 3, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse
Mack is just for show, LoDuca is going to hit
Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 3:38 PM | Report abuse
Game of chess going on.
Manny burns a player from an already-short bench by placing Mackowiak on deck, then replacing him with Lo Duca when lefty Romero gets the call.
It's a one-run game. Shorter bench, and no more backup catcher.

Why not just stick up the switch-hitting Dmitri up?
Posted by: Section 506 (Before moving) | April 3, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse
There's a chance he's just not feeling well enough to hit, I think.

"Why not just stick up the switch-hitting Dmitri up?"
I'm guessing his back isn't quite right yet.

Left the bases loaded 2x and still not a loss yet. Crazy game. Zimm struggling a bit, defense and GW HRs notwithstanding.

Dagger... well, we tied it back.

I was quietly hoping Zimm would continue his HR-only streak there. :(

Definitely hearting Guz.

I'm buying everyone bigger gloves.
Posted by: John in Mpls | April 3, 2008 3:51 PM | Report abuse
This is why teams want relievers who can miss bats. (within the strike zone of course)
Posted by: Go Nats | April 3, 2008 3:52 PM | Report abuse
Zimm would have needed a net for that one

New post.

It's been a rough first week, but I still think the Nats pen is in the top 5 in MLB
Posted by: SwiftIt | April 3, 2008 3:54 PM | Report abuse
Charlie did point out that he saved a double just by getting the glove on it.
But really, I've heard "off the glove of..." too many times today.

Hope we don't regret not having broken the game open against Moyer in the early innings....

I have the Baseball package in New Brunswick Canada and enjoy watching the Nats.
Most of the time that is. In today's game, the Nats are ahead 6-1 and the Announcer(name escape me now of course but it was not Sutton) is informing all listeners that a basehit could lead to an eruption for the Phils which I am not the least bit interested in hearing. Man, we are ahead so let's be positive and concentrate on the Nat's performance. I had to hit the Mute.
I am done. Great start and the Nats are going to be fun to watch like the late '70's, early '80's, early '90's Expo teams.
