Any idea requires just six words

There's a theory drifting out there that any decent idea can be summarized in six words, which, by the way, I said directly above in six succinct words. A cursory Google search of "six words," in fact, reveals that Hemingway once authored an entire short story in this format. ("For sale: baby shoes, never worn.")

For reasons that only reveal my demented bookish side, I get a kick out of this stuff.

Anyway, allow me to introduce a little competition, which perhaps we can play here from time to time.

The Nats -- or at least their most recent game -- in six words:

My try for now?

"Better than softball-clapping? Softball hitting."

Have a go if you want.

I'll be back later this afternoon with far more elaborate thoughts on this burgeoning Mets-Nats rivalry.

Some hitting, some pitching, a win

Posted by: JD | May 13, 2008 9:46 AM | Report abuse

Dang - New posted.

But in the spirit of 6 words, I'll summarize:

Against Righties, Milledge second, Guzman 5th.
______________
From previous thread, a reply to Mark's 9 PM post -

Mark: I think you are on to something about Milledge and the top of the order. He did have one successful at bat last night, and I got his jersey because I'm looking forward to watching him play a long time, so I'm no Milledge critic. Having said that, I do think against RHP Milledge should bat 2d and Guzman 5th.

It's 1/4 of the season, and it's about time to stop saying "small sample size" to every trend. Against RHP:

Season
Milledge: OBP - .353, SLG - .384
Lopez: OBP - .333, SLG - .338
Guzman: OBP - .292, SLG - .376

While all of those SLG's are weak, it does not look like we lose much in the 5th spot if Guz is there, and we do pick up OBP in the 2d spot if Milledge is there. Also, it is small numbers, but Milledge got off to a good start over about 65 plate appearances as a #2 (.298/.354/.439). As you suggest, maybe we can get him going again without weakening the order.

Against LHP, I'd leave the Lopez/ Guzman combo 1 - 2 as is - they are doing well.
_______________
"it looks to me like milledge approach as a 5-hole hitter has been much more of the 'swing-for-the-fences' approach than his 2-hole approach. maybe the answer is as simple as bumping him back up to 2nd in the order and dropping guzman or lopez to 8th-ish??

"If you haven't figured out to watch these games with the sound turned down and the radio on, "

I'm definitely going to do that for the Zero
s series coming up, since MASN's chosen to send Sutton to join the opposing team's broadcast booth (and then for the next series, the Zip's broadcast team joins Carpenter).

Yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Does this bug anyone else? Do other teams do this for interleague series (Chicago, NY, LA, etc)?

"Yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Does this bug anyone else? Do other teams do this for interleague series (Chicago, NY, LA, etc)?"

No, other teams don't pool announcers for interleague series, because other teams control their own television rights and don't share them with their interleague rivals. Thus, each team can do its own broadcasts of games with interleague rivals.

The Nationals unfortunately are stuck with MASN, and MASN is in a lose-lose-lose position with the six Nats-O's games this year. They can either (a) do an HD broadcast with one team's announcers and a standard def broadcast with the other team's announcers, (b) do two separate standard def broadcasts and no HD as they do most of the season anyway, or (c) do an HD broadcast with pooled announcer teams and send it to both markets, as they have decided to do. Any one of these three choices is guaranteed to piss off a big chunk of their viewership. Of course, they wouldn't HAVE this problem if they'd just pony up the dough and broadcast all 162 games of both teams in HD as they should be doing.

ABM, thanks; I missed the HD angle (in spite of NatsFly pointing it out for me).

I'd just assumed the mixing of the broadcast teams was some dopey MASN attempt at building "synergy" between the franchises.

Early in the year MASN was bombarding us with Zero's advertising in the crawl. I notice that's stopped. I wonder if Nat's management b*tched about it -- I'm a little surprised they have any leverage at all to stop that kind of nonsense.

Breaking with the theme for a bit, I'm a bit concerned about the Nationals fan base. Not because of size or knowledge, or any of that. I'm concerned that we're going to be like those terrible New Yorkers I always sit in front of, who aren't happy unless they're complaining about their team. Who are happy to trade Jose Reyes because he had a bad night. Who throw tantrums about players getting excited and clapping or high-fiving, because it's "unprofessional." Who constantly call for the head of a pretty good manager, because the team performs under their bloated expectations. Please, please, please, let's not be those fans.

Just asking...The NY Times said our guys were rhythmically clapping to "unnerve Figueroa." If we were doing that, as opposed to just cheering, does that constitute bad sportsmanship? If the shoe were on the other foot, would we be complaining about the same behavior from the opposing team? (BTW, all I heard on the radio was "Let's go Nats," which I think is perfectly fine. But if the Times is right, is it still okay?) (BTW #2, if I were Figueroa, I wd be a lot more unhappy about my home fans booing me. I hope Nats fans never get in that nasty habit.)

Re: clapping to throw of the pitcher.

Yes, this is bad sportsmanship. Very bad.

Questions:

1) In a stadium of 45,000 fans all booing you for walking and hitting 8 batters, why are 20-some guys clapping throwing you off?

2) Does the whole stadium clapping in time in order to cheer the pitcher on for a crucial strike-out not throw him off?

3) How self-centered are New Yorkers to assume that the rhythmic clapping was to throw off their pitcher and not cheer on Nationals batters?

Dukes started something, others joined in, all had fun, unnerved the pitcher, won the game, got collectively name-called in the press ... that should be just enough to light the fire that this team needs. It's already working for Milledge. What's the big deal if another 25 join in. Is it unsportsmanlike? Maybe. If this is what came of Young's mentoring about leadership, well, excellent.

SOFTBALL GIRLS, SPANK GOTHAM AGAIN TONIGHT!

And if you think this is starting to smell like a real rivalry, just remember that there's only been one brawl in Nationals history and it was with the Mets after a hotheaded outfielder got plunked (and I, for one, loved it like a hockey fan while it lasted).
